More Sofa, More Problems: How to Get Large Sofas in Your Home

If you've moved into a home yourself , you understand how difficult getting a sofa through a doorway can be. It's easy to want to give up after a few failed attempts.

In addition to the strain of lifting, bruised hands and scraped knees are commonplace. However, it doesn't have to be this difficult. There are ways to make the process much easier.

Let's go over some things you can do to take the headache out of moving large sofas into your home.

Take Some Measurements

Before you try to get a couch through a narrow door, it's important to take some measurements first. You'll need to measure the sofa along with the doorway.

Make sure you measure the width, height, and length of the sofa. Then, measure the width and height of the doorway as well. These measurements will tell you whether you'll need to turn the sofa vertically or tilt it slightly when coming through the door.

You'll also need to consider how much space you have just inside the entrance of the doorway. If your path is obstructed by a wall, you may need to consider entering through a different door.

Go over all your options and find the easiest entrance point. The last thing you want is to get the sofa halfway in and realize it's not going to fit.

Remove Unnecessary Components

If you've taken measurements and see that it's going to be a tight fit, you may need to free up space. You can do this by removing a few things from the doorway and couch.

Removing the door altogether is a great way to get a few more inches of space. Pull out the pins from the door hinges and carefully lift the door off. You may also need to remove the hinges as well.

If your sofa has legs, check to see if they're removable. Taking them off will create more room and also make the lifting process easier.

For larger sofas, you may need to consider professional sofa disassembly. Most couches aren't designed to get taken apart. However, an expert can separate the deck from the back and perform sofa reassembly and couch relocation in your house.

Find the Right Angle

If you're dealing with a couch that has a slightly longer width than the doorway, you'll need to change the position of the sofa. When bringing it through the door, turn it so the back is facing up.

You may need to do a little repositioning until you find the right angle. Make sure you have several helpers, as this can prove difficult.

If there's a wall just inside in the doorway, you'll need to enter at a slant. It's hard to tell how much room you have while lifting a couch, so designate one person to stand watch and guide you.

Don't Let Large Sofas Cause Larger Headaches

A couch is one of the most difficult items to move into a house. They're heavy and awkward, which presents a problem if you're dealing with a narrow doorway.

Make sure you do a little preparation to ensure you're not trying to do the impossible. Use these tips when moving large sofas into your house and make the entire process easier.
